MKs Chemi Doron (Shinui) and Ofir Pines (Labor) petitioned the Supreme Court today, against the plea bargain agreement signed on Friday between Elchanan Tenenbaum and the State. Claiming that the agreement is "unreasonable to the extreme," the two MKs demand court injunctions against its implementation.

The agreement at issue states that Tenenbaum must explain exactly how he came to be held by Hizbullah and precisely which classified information he disclosed to them. It is known that Tenenbaum was closely familiar with a top-secret defense program. In return, he will be sentenced to jail for only as long as he spent in Hizbullah captivity, such that he will be released at once. If he is found to have perpetrated crimes against national defense, or not to be telling the truth, the agreement will become null and void.

Tenenbaum originally said that he traveled to Lebanon in order to find information on missing IAF navigator Ron Arad. Over the weekend, however, he admitted that he had actually traveled to Dubai in order to execute a large-scale drug deal, and was abducted from Dubai to Lebanon. This version has been widely assumed for several months. The possibility that Tenenbaum planned to divulge military secrets has not yet been ruled out, however.

MKs Doron and Pines claim in their suit that the decision to make an agreement with Tenenbaum was made "hastily, without the proper authority, without due consideration of all the ramifications, and without attempting to get to the truth in other ways."

Israel released some 450 Arab terrorists and prisoners last month in exchange for Tenenbaum and the bodies of three killed IDF soldiers.
