The Israeli men's flag football team is consistently and steadily climbing through the ranks internationally.
This year, the Israeli men's team took fourth place in the Fifth Flag Football World Cup, hosted February 20-22 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. In their opening game, Team Israel came out with a rush and overwhelmed Team England 18-0. In their second contest Israel coasted to a 12-0 win agains the overmatched St. Croix. Advancing to the quarter-finals knockout round, the Israeli men got their third win as they ousted the host country Team Dominican Republic 18-7. "We felt strong going into the Semi-finals against Canada," said coach Danny Tarrigan, "but a bad injury to Captain Yonah Mishaan proved to be our downfall."
With the score tied 6-6 late in the first half, Mishaan broke thru the offensive line and sacked the Canadian quarterback, but broke his leg during the play. Playing on a broken ankle, Mishaan stayed in the game for 20 minutes before doctors ordered that he be taken to the hospital. Defensive lapses followed, and Israel lost the close fought game 18-8.
Expressing his disappointment from his hospital room Mishaan said, "We were as good as any team in the tournament. It was a lost opportunity to take home the Cup."
As the men's game semi-final against Canada kicked off, the Israeli delegation was still celebrating the first ever international victory for the women's team, which also represented its debut at an international football competition. The women came out fighting on day two of the tournament and soundly defeated the host Dominican Republic 21-6. That was to be the first and only win for the women as they bowed out of the tournament with a lose to Cup favorites Canada 18-6.
Coach Mishaan said, "The women played great and really started to gel as the tournament went on. The girls got a victory and got a tremendous amount of experience. They will be back and much stronger next year."
The World Cup is run under the auspices of the International Federation of Flag Football, and is considered the premier tournament in international Contact 9-man Flag Football.
The Israeli national teams are sponsored by Jdate.com, Big Blue, Diamonds.com, the Kraft Family.
