Prime Minister Sharon met in Berlin today with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder and President Rau. This evening he will fly to Paris, meet with French President Jacques Chirac, and return to Israel tomorrow after meeting with French Prime Minister Jospin. By request of the Belgian government, Sharon will receive the Belgian Foreign Minister this afternoon for a short meeting.
Schroder called upon his guest to immediately implement the Mitchell Report, which calls for a settlement freeze in Judea and Samaria. Prime Minister Ariel told Schroeder that Israel is ready to make \'painful concessions,\' but only following a total cessation of Palestinian violence. \"So far there has not been one day of quiet in the past nine months,\" he said. The two leaders visited a local Holocaust Memorial.
Reporters on the plane to Berlin reported that Sharon was \"surprised\" to read in the newspapers that Israel was considering a military operation to topple Arafat or wipe out the Palestinian Authority. He denied any such plans, and said that it\'s not Israel\'s business to intervene in the issue of who heads the PA.
A senior member of the Prime Minister\'s entourage revealed that Mossad Intelligence Agency Director Ephraim HaLevi has met with European leaders, presenting them with documentation proving Yasser Arafat\'s direct responsibility for terrorist attacks.
