Israel’s Judo champion Arik Zeevi won the Gold Medal today (Sunday) at the European Federation’s ‘Super A’ tournament, which is being held in Paris.
Zeevi competed in the ‘100 kg’ (220 pounds) category, going into the tournament with a back injury he had been grappling with through the past year.
He began the day with a match-up against a competitor from Qatar. The Israeli delegation was not sure whether the Qatari delegation would show up for a match with a Jewish competitor but they eventually did – to see Ayed Mohammed, the competitor from Qatar, roundly defeated in an Ippon, which is a single match-winning move.
The next round Zeevi won his match against the German competitor, Michael Yurak. In the third round, he beat the world championship finalist, Justine Lemer, in a bout that lasted 5 minutes. Zeevi then carried out a second Ippon on the Bosnian competitor, Makitch.
The Israeli Judo champion then proceeded to beat his final opponent, the Georgian competitor, in only 3:35 minutes to win the title.
Zeevi will be competing at the Olympics this summer in Athens, Greece.
