A Kassam rocket fired from Gaza landed in Kibbutz Nahal Oz in the Negev this morning, damaging a hen house and landing just yards away from a gas tank storage area and 50 yards from residents’ homes, according to Arutz-7's Moshe Priel. Sha’ar HaNegev Council Head Elon Schuster has protested the government’s refusal to grant the region, which is attacked daily, equal status to Sderot – another city within Israel’s pre-1967 borders that faces regular rocket attacks.
Arab terrorists continued to target civilian motor vehicle traffic, as well, leading to several light injuries. A roadblock consisting of rocks placed in the roadway by Arabs between Ariel and Tapuah Junction, on the Trans-Samaria Highway, resulted in a collision early last night. Several persons were injured as a result. In addition, a passenger bus was targeted in a rock-throwing attack south of the army checkpoint on the Tunnels Highway; there were no injuries in that attack. Other incidents targeting civilians included burning tires positioned along the security perimeter fence of the Gush Etzion community of Beitar Illit, and a bomb, which was detected and neutralized, placed near the security fence in the Kissufim area of Gaza.
It is now cleared for publication that a Jewish Israeli man was arrested last week in connection with the December bombing at the Geha junction near Petach Tikva, which killed four people. The man, from the town of Oranit, near Rosh Ha’ayin, is suspected of having smuggled the bomber into pre-1967 Israel. His motive at this point appears to have been the 100 shekels he was paid to transport the PA Arab through IDF checkpoints, a crime he had allegedly committed several times in the past with Arab laborers. The suspect’s attorney claims that his client did not know his passenger was a terrorist.
In other counterterrorism arrests, IDF troops during the night apprehended nine Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorists in Birzeit, in the Ramallah district. They were turned over to the custody of the GSS (General Security Service/Shin Bet). In military operations today, IDF forces are concentrating on the Palestinian Authority city of Tul Karem, east of the coastal city of Netanya. Several wanted terrorists are known to be in the city; one of the targets tried to escape, was shot in the leg and was captured. There have been no IDF casualties and the operation continues.
Elsewhere, IDF forces in the Rafiach area of Gaza came under repeated terrorist gunfire yesterday and today; Arab gunmen opened fire on IDF forces on the Karni-Netzarim road in Gaza; a firebomber who had lit an incendiary device and was about to hurl it at soldiers was shot dead in Beta, south of Shechem; and soldiers were targeted in other firebomb attacks near the Arab village of Burka, also near Shechem. There were no injuries to IDF forces.
