Iran and Egypt have announced the restoration of full diplomatic relations. Iran severed its ties with Egypt following the peace treaty with Israel of 1978. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher told the Iranian news Agency IRNA that previous differences no longer exist.

In a symbolic step to publicize the new relationship, the Iranian government has ordered the Tehran municipality to change the name of Khaled Islambuli Street, which was named in honor of the assassin of the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The street will now be named Muhammad Al-Dura Street, in memory of the Arab boy who became a symbol in the Arab world of the war against Israel, when he was allegedly shot on camera by Israelis. It should be noted, however, that independent IDF and European media investigations have shown that this claim is untrue.

Meanwhile, Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad landed in Turkey yesterday for a three-day state visit - the first such visit since Syrian independence was granted in 1946. Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul issued a statement praising the spirit of cooperation between the two states, while Syria's Al-Baath government mouthpiece heralded a push for "a genuine partnership based on the reality of neighborhood and reciprocated interests."
