An intercom system, shovels and an electric guidance system - not unlike that used by remote-controlled toy cars - were found in one of the two weapons smuggling tunnels found yesterday by IDF soldiers and Border Guard police in the southern Gaza area. The tunnel, which opened up into a private home in Rafiah, was blown up by IDF sappers.
Over 40 such tunnels were found in the course of 2003, and many more are assumed to be operative. The earth in the area is sandy and light, enabling easy tunnel-digging. Israel has accused Egypt of turning a blind eye to the smugglers' operations, by which guns, ammunition, drugs and even terrorists are smuggled between Egypt and the Palestinian Authority.
A sampling of Palestinian violence since yesterday: IDF soldiers were targeted by gunfire from the Arab village of Gamine, southwest of Shechem... Two mortar shells were launched against southern Gush Katif communities this morning... Border Guard police were targeted in a bomb attack near the Arab village of Salim in the northern Shomron. There were no injuries in these incidents.
