In an article entitled “Identical Policies” from December 12, 2003, in the Saudi-backed Al-Hayat newspaper, Maher Othman declared, “the Zionist Lobby and the American right, known as the neo-conservatives, are generally more loyal to Israel than they are to the U.S.” But why? “Americans work for the sake of their big corporations, to increase their profits and guarantee control over oil resources, wherever and whenever,” he explained.
The theme of neo-conservative, Zionist and Jewish control of the US repeats itself periodically throughout the Arab world; however, it becomes oddly significant when states that enjoy American support publish such charges. In a second example from this month’s press coverage alone, the English-language press of another of America’s allies, Jordan, carried an article by a columnist who opined, “The foreign policy of the only remaining superpower was hijacked by... Sharon’s clones in DC, Wolfowitz, Perle, Feith, Wurmser and other ‘neoconservatives’.”
Or as the Al-Hayat columnist, Othman, put it: “It appears that Sharon controls the Israeli-American relationship.” And not just when it comes to Israel, according to the Saudi writer, do the neo-conservatives act in Zionist interests. “[T]hose who control Washington's policy in our Arab world, especially in Palestine and Iraq, are Zionists whose interests oppose Arab interests. Parallel to the White House's adoption of Israeli policies, the American military establishment started adopting and applying, in Iraq, the same barbaric means that the Israeli forces use in the Palestinian occupied territories....”
Othman wrote that one local effect of the “Zionist control” in America, as he described it, is that “[e]ver since he came to power, Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon never even considered the fact that the U.S. administration could exert pressure on him... and thus guarantee him immunity against any sanctions that anyone in the Bush administration may think of. The fact is that Sharon succeeded thanks to the strong influence these groups have in America, and their power to convince the Bush administration of adopting his policies....”
The Al-Hayat columnist challenged those among his readers who may believe that the US president is pressuring Israel: “because of... the situation in Iraq and the presidential elections.” On the contrary, Othman wrote, “It appears that Sharon controls the Israeli-American relationship. He is even bold enough to announce his intention to cancel the Roadmap and replace it with a 'plan' of his making... intended to foster the process of eating up more Palestinian land.”
Othman warned his readers. “The fatal mistake that some Arabs make is thinking for one moment, that the U.S. administration cares for the fate of any of the two peoples, the Palestinian or the Iraqi.”
