The Cabinet parted this morning from Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein, who is about to end his more than six years in the post. "A man of pleasant ways, who served in the public sector for 30 years in various positions, a man who always searched for compromise," said Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Minister Ehud Olmert added that Rubenstein is a Torah scholar and very knowledgeable in many areas - but said that in any event, the post of Attorney-General has grown above and beyond its proper proportions.
The Cabinet voted to appoint State Prosecutor Edna Arbel as temporary Attorney-General until a permanent appointment is made, probably within the coming weeks. Transportation Minister Avigdor Lieberman spoke out harshly against Arbel, saying that she is not honest and that she is the reason that the public no longer trusts the State Prosecution. He and Elon voted against her appointment, while Ministers Landau and Eitam abstained. Sixteen ministers voted in favor.
Elyakim Rubenstein is expected to be named a Supreme Court justice in the coming months.
