Ten Likud Party MKs convened today and resolved that if the government approves the uprooting of Migron, they will not see themselves as bound by coalition discipline. Signed to the declaration are MKs David Levy, Gilad Erdan, Naomi Blumental, Leah Ness, Inbal Gavrieli, Gila Gamliel, Ayoub Kara, Ehud Yatom, Moshe Kachlon, and Yechiel Chazan. The group's objections to Prime Minister Sharon's proposed unilateral retreat also has the tacit support of Ministers HaNegbi and Katz, and of other Knesset Members.
A senior Yesha Council member said that many Likud Central Committee members have contacted Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz over the past few days, warning him not to sign orders to destroy Jewish towns in Yesha. The Likudniks say that if he does, they will make sure to prevent his election to the Likud's list of Knesset candidates for the next election. Mofaz is currently not a Knesset Member.
The Yesha Council decided last night to hold a giant protest rally in three weeks' time against the planned unilateral withdrawals planned by Prime Minister Sharon. The rally, under the banner "Israel Doesn't Want to Fold," will be held at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv. The Council says that the rally will be the opening salvo of a "continuous and hard-hitting campaign against the Prime Minister's plans to destroy the settlement enterprise in Yesha, to transfer and expel Jews, and to retreat under fire."
The Knesset will debate today the proposal by the Shas faction to vote no-confidence in the government. The stated reason for the motion: the government's intention to uproot outposts. The debate places the National Union in an uncomfortable position, as it is not yet ready to quit the government. The party's Knesset faction will convene before the vote to decide its position.
