Former Chief Rabbi Avraham Shapira, dean of Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav Kook, wrote the following letter regarding the threatened destruction of Migron:
To all those who love our Holy Land,
We are encountering intentions, Heaven forbid, to evacuate Jewish communities in our Holy Land - the precious love of both the upper and lower worlds.
We stand in shock at these futile ideas and thoughts, that come not from within, but from without. Our Sages have taught us: "The first stage of defeat is retreat." I do not understand those who make these decisions, who thereby destabilize their very regime.
We must answer the call and come to the aid of these heroes in every spot in Israel, and take action and prevent the uprooting of communities. Such destruction is forbidden according to our Holy Torah, and also leads us, Heaven forbid, to security dangers.
I call on every individual to enlist in the cause, each according to his abilities, and to join together with one heart in order that this evil thought not be carried out.
May G-d instill the leaders of the State with good counsel, and may He strengthen their spirit, that they may stand strongly and totally rebuff all these abominable thoughts.
"The voice is the Voice of Jacob" - we must increase our prayer and Torah study in the merit of the Nation of Israel. As is known from the sacred writings, every part of the Land of Israel draws strength from parts in the Torah. The Holy One, Blessed be He, will hear our voice, and may we be informed of good tidings and salvations for all Israel.
With loyal blessing,
Rabbi Avraham Shapira
