Israel has expressed a willingness to assist India in its nuclear submarine program, IDF sources reported. According to an Indian newspaper, The Hindu Report, the understanding was reached during the visit of a high-level technical team from India's Defense Research and Development Organization last month. Israeli and Indian government officials refused to comment.

The matter was first raised during the recent visit of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to New Delhi in September, the first trip to India by an Israeli Prime Minister since both countries gained their independence in the late 1940's. Trade between Israel and India reached a level of $1.25 billion last year, after beginning in 1991 with only $200 million.
