The IDF operated for several hours today in Rafiach, the city that is split down the middle between Egypt and PA-controlled territory in the Gaza Strip. Early this morning, a Givati division entered the slum area in search of a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist leader, as well as other wanted terrorists. When the forces surrounded a complex of homes in which the killer was believed to be hiding, fire was opened on the soldiers, including anti-tank missiles. No Israelis were hurt, and the forces returned fire, killing two terrorists and another passerby. The sought-after Islamic Jihad terrorist was apprehended. The Rafiach Crossing was closed during the course of the offensive.
Rafiach holds the record for most attacks against IDF soldiers in the past three years; grenades, gunfire and more have often been a nightly affair.
Three arms-smuggling tunnels have been discovered in the Rafiach area in the past few days... Soldiers operating in PA-controlled Shechem were targeted in a bomb attack during the night; no one was hurt... The IDF arrested four wanted terrorist suspects in Kalkilye last night, three more in Hevron, two wanted Hamas members north of Ramallah, and another one in Shechem.
