A major terrorist attack was thwarted today in the Shomron, thanks to an alert Arab resident. He reported to the police on his sighting of a suspicious object slightly north of Tapuach Junction, slightly south of Shechem in central Shomron. The object was in fact found to be a 20-kilogram explosive device, which was safely detonated by IDF sappers. Another bomb was found last night near Tul Karem, east of Netanya; it had apparently been intended to explode in a crowded Israeli area.
In Gush Katif, an IDF officer sustained moderate wounds this morning when fired upon near Kfar Darom. Later today, no one was injured in a similar attack near N'vei Dekalim.
Despite the continuing terrorist efforts, and in response to American pressure to "ease conditions" for the Arab residents of the PA, the army removed three checkpoints in Judea and Samaria today. The three are Surda, just north of Ramallah, between Beit El and Dolev; east of Halhoul in the Kiryat Arab area; and south of Meitzad in eastern Gush Etzion. The eastern checkpoint of the city of Kalkilye, east of Netanya, was removed earlier in the week.
