In January, 2003, at the height of Israel's election campaign, editorial cartoonist Dave Brown of Britain's Independent drew a caricature of a grotesque Ariel Sharon eating an Arab child. Sharon is seen saying, "What's wrong... You never seen a politician kissing babies before?"

The cartoon was adopted by radical Islamic groups as part of their anti-Israel and anti-American campaigns, even as it was being vociferously protested by Israeli officials and Jewish groups. The official Israeli protest was waved off by Britain's Press Council with an explanation that the cartoon was a legitimate manifestation of freedom of speech.

"Here's Israel's real attitude toward Arab babies," writes HonestReporting.com . It quotes news media reporting on a week-old Iraqi infant that arrived in Israel this week to undergo an operation to correct a congenital heart defect. European hospitals refused to accept the baby. HonestReporting.com further states that the Political Cartoon Society may be contacted at: "www.politicalcartoon.co.uk/html/contactus.html".

In this connection, Maariv newspaper quotes an Israeli Foreign Ministry official: "We once sent a letter of complaint to a Spanish newspaper on an offensive cartoon, and we received in response another cartoon against us. The second cartoon depicts the cartoonist himself with his secretary bringing him our letter, and he says, 'It's good that the Israelis sent only a letter this time, and not their usual destructive tools.'"
