Four leading Yesha (Judea, Samaria and Gaza) Rabbis have issued a statement opposing the political use of ‘administrative detention,’ saying it violates “Jewish law, justice and fundamental integrity.”
The declaration was released by Rabbis Dov Lior, Eliezer Waldman, Moshe Levinger and Uzi Sharbaf. It reads:
"We, Rabbis of Yesha, express our opposition to the administrative detention of Hebron resident Noam Federman and unconditionally condemn the behavior against him during incarceration and the attempt to negate his freedom, thereby harming his family and young children, without the benefit of a trial and without any proof of guilt against him.
"The idiotic and futile political use of administrative detention in the name of security, whereby a person is prevented from standing trial, and without evidence, counters Jewish law, justice and fundamental integrity.
"The attempt to break his spirit utilizing humiliating and shocking jail conditions, while impairing his religious lifestyle can only be defined as adding salt to his wound.
"We turn to all members of the Israeli justice system to immediately halt this administrative detention and abuse of Noam Federman, and to immediately free him from prison. Should proof be found against him, he should be put on trial with the same rights accorded to every citizen in the State of Israel."
Elsewhere today, an Israeli judge released an Arab prisoner, convicted for infiltrating into pre-’67 Israel, due to “harsh prison conditions.”
The judge said, “There is no doubt that the conditions are subhuman. Each time I have an opportunity to visit jail cells I am astounded at the conditions. The fact that a person has broken the law does not legitimatize physical and psychological abuse. If the state cannot protect human dignity there will be a very heavy price to pay.”
The judge, Shmuel Baruch, sentenced the Arab man to a three month suspended sentence.
