Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom responded to the cut of almost $300 million from the US loan guarantees with equanimity. He said that the cut, about which U.S. National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice informed Prime Minister Sharon's advisor Dov Weisglass yesterday, was the result of "principles agreed upon by the US Administration and Israel."
The sum is not broken down into specific clauses, but it comprises the estimated costs of Israel's investments in Judea and Samaria, as well as those of the counter-terrorism partition wall/fence that Israel is building on or near the Green Line. Shalom said that Israel would continue building the partition, "which has proven its life-saving capacities, and will help us maintain the peace process."
MK Eliezer Cohen (National Union), responding to Trade Minister Ehud Olmert's decision to facilitate the EU's taxation of Yesha-made goods by ordering the city of manufacture to be listed on every product: "It is very grave that a minister in an Israeli government that supports the Yesha settlement enterprise tries to hurt them economically. I demand a strong government rebuke of Minister Olmert. The residents of Yesha are endangering their lives in order to maintain our security. It is unacceptable for them to be discriminated against and shunned, merely in order to find favor in the eyes of the Europeans."
