The Knesset held a special memorial session yesterday for the late Rehavam Ze'evi, the Cabinet minister who was murdered two years ago in a Jerusalem hotel by Palestinian terrorists. Ze'evi was serving as Tourism Minister at the time of his murder, was the founder of the Moledet Party (today a part of the National Union), commanded the IDF's Central Region, served as counter-terrorism advisor to Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, and was a Land of Israel patriot. Prime Minister Sharon told the Knesset yesterday that Ze'evi, universally known as Gandhi, "continues to be a source of inspiration for me."
Opposition leader Shimon Peres noted Gandhi's love of the Land, Jerusalem, Hebrew, and the IDF. Other "loves" of Gandhi included Hevron, tefillin (which he donned every day), and concern for Israeli MIAs. National Union leader Transportation Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Ze'evi would certainly not have approved of the diplomatic plans currently in formulation.
In an provocative move, PA Chief Ahmed Qureia (Abu Ala) met with PFLP head Ahmed Saadat, who orchestrated Ze'evi’s murder, at the exact time that the Knesset memorial was taking place – ostensibly to discuss the latest temporary cease-fire offer.
Officials in the Prime Minister's Office were caught off guard by Abu Ala's meeting with Saadat, Maariv reported. "It doesn't look like Abu Ala is trying to build trust with Israel if he goes to visit Ze'evi's killers on the anniversary of his death," they said.
"This is a very serious act, for which there is no remorse," declared Transportation Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman called on the government to cancel all agreements and understandings with the Palestinian Authority on the matter of Ze'evi's assassins.
