A mortar shell fired by Palestinian Authority terrorists this morning (Wednesday) landed near Kibbutz Alumim in the south, inside Israeli’s pre-1967 borders. The shelling followed two other mortar attacks last night on N’vei Dekalim and Kfar Darom, in Gush Katif. A mobile home in N’vei Dekalim sustained some damages. There were no injuries in the shelling incidents. Also in Gush Katif, IDF soldiers were targeted in at least two separate shooting and hand-grenade attacks on military positions. Near Tapuach, in the Shomron, Arab attackers threw rocks at Israeli civilian targets. There were no injuries in any of the attacks. During the IDF’s operations in the Rafiach area of southern Gaza during the past 24 hours, a tunnel was discovered fifteen meters (16.4 yards) underground. The tunnel, used to smuggle weapons into PA-controlled Gaza, connected to Egypt. Gaza Regional Council officials report that since the beginning of the year, IDF forces have uncovered 40 such weapons tunnels connecting PA-controlled Gaza with Egypt. These tunnels are used to import weapons and ammunition from Egypt, as well as serving as a thoroughfare for terrorists.
A preliminary IDF investigation into Tuesday’s terrorist shooting on the Tunnels Road, which left two IDF soldiers dead, revealed that one of the victims, the commander at the targeted checkpoint, may have spoken to his killer before the latter opened fire. Further information indicates that there was no immediate pursuit protocol implemented after the attack, facilitating the attacker’s escape. The investigation into the attack and the soldiers’ response continues.
Meanwhile, Arab sources have reported that the shooter was a Rafiach-based member of the Palestinian Authority security forces, and that he has been arrested by PA police. There is no independent confirmation of the PA report.
