The Likud Knesset faction has officially called upon Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to create territorial contiguity between Kiryat Arba and Hevron, as he promised to do a year ago. The occasion of his promise was the aftermath of an Arab ambush attack that led to the deaths of 12 Israeli soldiers and civilians along Worshipers' Path connecting the two towns. Sharon has since officially retracted his promise, citing "diplomatic concerns."
The Likud MKs, headed by Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin, visited the area yesterday, and issued an announcement saying that the party "strengthens the hand of the Jewish residents in the area, who are bodily carrying out a national mission under difficult conditions."
The Jews of Hevron say that there has lately been increased Arab construction along Worshipers' Path, with the blessing of the Civil Administration. The IDF recently began preparations to allow Arabs to re-open stores in the vicinity of the Jewish neighborhoods in Hevron, despite the security risks involved. Several Likud MKs, including David Levy, registered their objections to placing concern for Arab property above concern for Jewish security.
