Several dozen people demonstrated last night outside the Ashmoret Prison near Netanya on behalf of administrative detainee Noam Federman. They demanded that he be released from his six-month administrative detention sentence, of which he has completed a quarter. At the very least, they said, the harsh conditions under which he is being held, without being charged with a crime, should be alleviated. Federman, a Hevron resident, is a former Kach organization activist, who proffered legal counsel and advice to several of the Jewish security prisoners currently on trial or serving sentences.
A petition was submitted in Federman's name to the Supreme Court today, requesting that he be included in the prisoner exchange currently under discussion with Hizbullah. The claim states that the authorities are treating him as a terrorist, in allowing him neither phone privileges nor more than basic visitation rights, and that he should be released. It is further claimed that he is being held in close proximity to the cells of Dirani and Obeid, who are to be released in the exchange. Federman made a similar claim last week to Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz, who signed the six-month detention order, but to no avail.
