Magen David Adom in Israel (Red Star of David; MDA) is hosting its first-ever disaster management workshop on November 10th and 11th. The workshop is organized in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Federation), and the American Red Cross (ARC).
"The goal of the workshop is to give MDA and Red Cross experts an opportunity to share their experience in disaster assessment, management and international assistance," explained Chaim Rafalowski, Head of MDA Emergency Department. Participating in the workshop are MDA managerial staff, as well as various experts from the International Red Cross Movement. This includes disaster management experts from the Geneva headquarters of the ICRC and Federation; health and disaster management experts from the Federation’s regional delegations in Amman and Central Asia; representatives from the ICRC, Federation delegations in Israel, and experts from the American, British, German and Norwegian Red Cross societies, and the Palestine Red Crescent.
Representatives from the Israel Defence Force and Ministry of Health will also attend the workshop.
The workshop represents the implementation of the Cooperation Agreements between MDA and the ICRC (June 2003) and the Memorandum of Understanding between MDA and American Red Cross (November 2002). This, despite the persistent refusal of the ICRC to formally recognize MDA as a member of the international organization, which encompasses Red Cross and Red Crescent emergency service providers throughout the world.
