Supporters of Noam Federman heckled Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz last night as he was being honored by the Shurat HaDin Israel Law Center in Jerusalem.
"You should be embarrassed! You are releasing terrorists, but Federman remains in administrative detention," the demonstrators shouted. They were protesting the orders, signed by Mofaz, assigning Federman to prison for six months on "administrative detention." Federman, a resident of Hevron, is being held in Ashmoret Prison near Netanya, and is being denied basic prisoners' rights such as visitation with friends and second-degree family members, phone calls, and more. Federman was permitted to attend his daughter's Bat Mitzvah celebration this week for two hours and twenty minutes, but he was forced to wear handcuffs for the duration.
The Israel Law Center, an Israeli civil rights organization, presented Defense Minister Mofaz with an award for his efforts in combating terrorism. The award was presented on behalf of the victims of Palestinian terrorism at a dinner in Jerusalem in conjunction with the Center's "Ultimate Mission to Israel." More than 75 doctors, lawyers and other professionals from around the world participated in the 8-day fact-finding conference on the "realities of Palestinian terror." Shurat HaDin, headed by Attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, is a leader in the worldwide legal struggle to combat terrorism by introducing civil actions against the terrorist organizations, their leaders and financial patrons.
