Noam Federman, serving a six-month administrative detention order in the Ashmoret Prison, was treated for smoke inhalation this afternoon, after an Arab terrorist imprisoned in the adjacent cell set it on fire. Federman's wife said afterwards, "It's time to stop endangering Noam's life by incarcerating him with Arab terrorists. He must be moved to the Ramle Prison immediately."
Federman was placed under house arrest a year ago, and was literally in the midst of petitioning the Supreme Court for an end to the sentence last month when police officials served him the administrative detention order in the Supreme Court building. The order was signed by Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz. Federman's friends said afterwards that this was an example of how the Shabak (General Security Service) bypasses the Supreme Court.
Elisheva Federman, Noam's wife, told Arutz-7 that her husband has proven his innocence over 20 times after repeatedly being charged with various crimes, "and this is therefore the GSS' only way of getting him."
Wives and children of several other Jewish security prisoners held a demonstration outside the Ayalon Prison in Ramle this week. They protested against the prison conditions of their husbands and fathers, insisting that the Arab "security prisoners" are treated better than their loved ones.
Incarcerated in Ayalon are Yitzhak Pass, Mati Shvo, Yosef Ben-Baruch, Ofir Gamliel, Shlomi Dvir, Yarden Morag, Tzuriel Amior, and Gur Hamel. Because of the recent hunger strike they held in solidarity with Federman, they have been denied visits from their families for the next two months. Federman is being held separately in a prison populated with Arab terrorists, whose daily threats on his life he is forced to hear.
Supporters of Federman have organized an on-line petition addressed to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who oversees the General Security Services, and Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz, which can be accessed at "www.petitiononline.com/federman/petition.html".
Federman will, however, be permitted to attend his daughter's Bat Mitzvah celebration next week. The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the Shabak and Prison Service to enable the Hevron resident to take part in the joyous occasion, but stipulated that the event take place in Jerusalem, not Hevron, and that it could include only family members and his daughter's friends.
Outrage over the policy of administrative detentions, by which an individual is imprisoned for months at a time without standing trial or meeting with a lawyer, is not limited to the right of the political spectrum. Writing in an Israeli daily on September 30, left-wing MK Zahava Gal'on of Meretz declared, "Noam Federman should either be put on trial or released. Circumventing the law rather than upholding it points to hysteria and confusion, and does not achieve its purpose."
