Federman, a resident of Hevron, is serving a three-month administrative detention order in Ashmorot Prison. He will be escorted to the family event by Prison Authority security personnel.
Federman had been under house arrest for the past year, and was literally in the midst of petitioning the Supreme Court to overturn the decision when the warrant for his administrative detention was served him in the Supreme Court building. Federman's friends pointed to this as an example of how the Shabak (General Security Service) bypasses the Supreme Court.
Elisheva Federman, Noam's wife, told Arutz-7 that her husband has proven his innocence over 20 times after repeatedly being charged with various crimes, "and this is therefore the GSS' only way of getting him." The order was signed by Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz.
Wives and children of several other Jewish “security prisoners” held a demonstration outside the Ayalon Prison in Ramle on Monday. They protested against the conditions of their husbands and fathers in prison, insisting the Arab “security prisoners” are treated better than their loved ones.
Imprisoned in the Ayalon Prison are Motti Shvo, Yitzhak Pass, Yosef Ben-Baruch, Ofir Gamliel, Gur Hamel, Shlomi D’vir, Yarden Morag, and Tzuriel Amior. Because of the hunger strike which they called on behalf of Federman they have been denied visits with their wives and children for the next two months.
Outrage over the policy of administrative detentions, by which an individual is imprisoned for months at a time without standing trial or meeting with a lawyer, is not limited to the right of the political spectrum although the recipients of such detention have been. Writing in an Israeli daily on September 30, left-wing MK Zahava Gal'on of Meretz declared, "Noam Federman should be put on trial or released. Circumventing the law rather than upholding it points to hysteria and confusion, and does not achieve its purpose."
Supporters of Federman have organized an on-line petition addressed to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who oversees the General Security Services, and Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz, which can be accessed at "www.petitiononline.com/federman/petition.html".
