The details have not been publicized, for reasons of security, but a terrorist attack of some type against an El Al airplane was apparently thwarted in Canada last night.
El Al flight 105 took off yesterday morning from Israel, headed for Toronto and Los Angeles with some 190 passengers and crew. Several hours later, Israeli security officials phoned Canada's Transportation Ministry, and said that intelligence information had been received warning of terrorist plans to target the plane in Toronto. The Canadians shortly thereafter ordered the plane to land in Montreal. There was no panic on the plane, and the passengers accepted their unexpected detour with understanding. The plane then flew to Hamilton, Ontario, in proximity to Toronto, where 44 Toronto-based passengers disembarked and several others flying to Los Angeles boarded. The flight to Los Angeles proceeded without incident, landing there this morning Israel time. Details of the nature of the threat were not reported, although it was not of the highest level.
