Israel's military response to the Haifa massacre of three days ago included an IDF attack that night in Gaza and an Israel Air Force bombing raid against a Syrian army training camp 15 kilometers northwest of Damascus. Arutz-7's Kobi Finkler reports that the Iranian-supported camp provides advanced training to terrorists, who then return to the PA areas to establish terrorist infrastructures. The Israeli attack, in which one Syrian was reported injured, was the first one in Syrian territory in 30 years.
In light of the killing of an IDF soldier yesterday, ostensibly by a Syrian-backed Hizbullah terrorist, the wisdom of the Israeli attack was the talk of the media today. Transportation Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Israel's response was not strong enough. "For too long we have allowed Syria to evade responsibility for its terrorist-supporting activities," he said, and noted that Syria must continue to be bombed, as must Arafat's Mukata. Asked if he does not think that such an approach could lead to an all-out conflagration, Lieberman answered, "They have been murdering our citizens for years now. We simply cannot allow this to continue while they strive to reach military parity with us - 10,000 missiles are lined up against us on the Lebanese border, Iran is developing nuclear weapons, Syria is working on biological weapons - and if we have to burn Damascus and Beirut to put an end to all this, once and for all, so be it."
MK Amram Mitzna (Labor), quite opposed to the attack, said that the government's actions "make no sense," that there's no need to attack Syria, and that he "trembles at night knowing that Minister Lieberman, with his crazy ideas, is sitting in the government and has more than a little influence." What needs to be done, Mitzna says, is to "remove the checkpoints [designed to stop Palestinian terrorists in Judea, Samaria and Gaza] and free PA prisoners - and thus prop up and negotiate with [new PA leader] Abu Ala. I believe that there is someone with whom to talk on that side."
Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuval Shteinitz (Likud), explained on Arutz-7 this morning that Syria provides various forms of aid to the terrorists operating in the Palestinian Authority, as well as to Hizbullah:
"Syria gives logistical help in money and weapons [and training] to the terrorists. The Syrians are the #1 terrorist-supporting country in the Middle East, and they do this proudly and openly... All regimes that support terrorism are our enemy - first and foremost Arafat, and next, or even on the same level, is Syria."
Shteinitz said that Arafat must be clearly punished; he places no stock in the rumors that Arafat, reported to be in ill health, has been poisoned.
