Israelis Adi Azizi and Yuval Yener walked away from the 5th World Junior Pairs Championship Bridge competition - a worldwide championship event - with the gold medal. The bridge competition was held in Tata, Hungary in July and attracted 189 pairs from 27 countries, making it the second best attended youth bridge event ever held. It was hosted by the Hungarian Bridge Federation.
The final results had to be tabulated and retabulated carefully, as the final pair facing off against Azizi and Yener - Jerome and Guillaume Grenthe - came within a fraction of a percent of the Israelis. After moments of anxiety, the Israeli pair was declared victorious and the French brothers were awarded the silver medal.
One Italian bridge afficionado commented that the victory of the two Israeli youths “confirms, once again, the value of the Israeli bridge school that has produced many talents in recent years.”
