The celebrations of Shimon Peres' 80th birthday continue in Tel Aviv today. Prime Minister Sharon, who took part in last night's bash and even alluded to a possible political partnership in the future, will be present today at the closing session of the international conference in Peres' honor at Tel Aviv University.
The heavy security provided by 1,200 policemen and security personnel for Peres' birthday party led to the cancellation of a presidential function. A planned visit by President Moshe Katzav to the Israeli-Arab town of Kfar Kassem was cancelled today because the GSS was unable to spare the necessary manpower to secure the President's visit.
While hundreds of famous domestic and foreign leaders, businessmen and entertainers were celebrating Peres' birthday inside the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv, over 100 people demonstrated outside the building. The latter lamented the over 1,100 deaths caused by Peres' Oslo process, and the fact that Peres himself shows no remorse for his actions. Housing Minister Effie Eitam said today, "It is untenable that in this period of repentance, before the High Holidays, a Jew should show no remorse, and should emphasize so clearly, 'I regret nothing.'"
