The Jerusalem District Court handed down its verdict in the case of three Bat Ayin suspects this afternoon, ruling them guilty of attempted murder. The three - Yarden Morag, Shlomi Dvir, and Ofer Gamliel (father of seven) - were convicted of conspiring to bomb an Arab girls' school. The three did not deny involvement in the case, but rather claimed that the bomb was never meant to go off. Atty. Naftali Wurtzberger said that there is no argument as to the fact that the bomb could not have gone off, "but the question is whether the defendants did this purposely or accidentally. The court entered the realm of 'intentions' by saying that this was done accidentally, and this is what we will review." At least one of the defendants expressed remorse for his actions.
The three defendants have been incarcerated since May 2002. Atty. Naftali Wurzberger accused the GSS at the time of "over-involvement" in the case, and said that "whoever thinks that the GSS just happened to find the defendants while on a routine patrol is very naive."
Yosef Ben-Baruch, who was married while under police guard and in hand-and-leg-cuffs ten weeks ago, is also imprisoned in connection with this case. His trial will take place separately, as he has pleaded not guilty.
