Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein today rejected a request from MK Yossi Sarid of the left-wing Meretz opposition party to lift Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s parliamentary immunity. A member of Rubinstein’s staff responded to Sarid’s letter, explaining that such a move is not relevant at this time. The ongoing police investigation is hampered by the refusal of the prime minister’s son to submit documents to the police, the Attorney General’s office added, saying that this problem is addressed by turning to the courts.

Sharon and his sons are the subjects of police investigations alleging illegal monetary dealings relating to campaign loans and funding. To date, Sharon’s son Gilad has refused to cooperate with police, maintaining silence during questioning. Another son, Likud MK Omri, is scheduled to be questioned this week. He explained that, as a publicly elected official, he plans to answer police questions.
