Ricki Hollander of CAMERA has a couple of hard questions for The New York Times. Her latest article relates to a front-page Times story of last Tuesday about the arrest of some Israeli Jews on charges of "security crimes" against Arabs. "Why such prominence for a story about unproven allegations?" asks Hollander. "Why use [the word] 'terror' in the headline and in reference to Jews who have yet to be found guilty - while at the same time terming as 'militants' Palestinian suicide bombers who have undeniably committed atrocities?"

Hollander also decries the Times' reliance on B'Tselem for its statistics:

"Why rely on statistics from a partisan and unreliable source?... [B]y its own admission, B'Tselem is not a reliable source of statistics on casualties and their circumstances. [Of the] 32 cases cited of Palestinian 'civilian' deaths at the hands of 'Israeli civilians,' 13 were a direct result of defensive measures. These included the shooting of Palestinians who had assaulted or were trying to assault Israelis by stabbing or gunfire. Some Palestinian assailants were killed while in the act of trying to infiltrate gated communities with the express purpose of perpetrating a terrorist attack..."

Hollander concludes with these questions: "Why have [author] Mr. Fisher and the New York Times chosen to feature a nearly 1,200-word article on the front page containing specious references and unreliable claims? Why is 'terror' terminology used for Israelis though rarely for Palestinian terrorists?" To comment, see "http://forum.nytimesprotest.org/YaBB.cgi?board=Camera".
