The Knesset Law Committee held a stormy session today on the right of public figures to utilize the right to remain silent during police investigations. The silence several months ago of MK Naomi Blumental, and last week of Prime Minister Sharon's son Gilad, has brought the issue to the fore. The committee resolved that the right to remain silent is a basic fundamental in the basic rights of those under investigation and must not be revoked - in opposition to the position of at least one former Supreme Court justice, Uri Shtruzman. However, the committee called on public and elected figures not to remain silent during police investigations.
