There are 630 students from 52 different countries in the program this year, as compared to 554 students last year. The greatest numbers of overseas students come from the U.S., Russia, Argentina, France, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Ukraine, according to Hebrew U. spokespersons.
In addition to the increase in the summer ulpan, the Rothberg School is also registering an even more dramatic increase in registration of students for the one-year/semester undergraduate program. At this stage, enrollment is up from 100 last year to 150 this year, with the prospect of an even greater increase with the start of the spring semester. Hebrew University spokespersons note that this is an especially noteworthy achievement, considering that American universities that ceased their cooperative agreements with Israeli universities during the PA terrorist war have yet to renew them.
Shimon Lipsky, vice-provost of the Rothberg School, said that the upturn in enrollment should be viewed as part of the trend of increasing visits to Israel in general by tourists and young people coming for vacations, volunteering or study. The situation in Israel now is somewhat calmer, said Lipsky, and "Israel is still an attractive place."
