“Israel has turned into a Jewish nationalist state.”

This, the London-based, Saudi-funded a-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper said, was the disturbing conclusion to be reached in light of the Israeli policy regarding the separation fence and regarding denial of automatic Israeli citizenship to Arabs from the Palestinian Authority who marry Israelis.

Regarding the latter policy, a-Sharq al-Awsat made the following confusing declaration: “This shows once again the extent of Israel’s racism and its anti-Palestinian discrimination, and it violates Israel’s basic dogma, which calls for protecting human pride and freedom.” Apparently, Israel, with its dogma of protecting human pride and freedom, the newspaper seems to say, has been, at the same time and prior to this policy change, displaying racism and discrimination.

Or maybe not: “This [policy] turns Israel into a racist country instead of one that had impressed all Arab parties with its attachment to democratic principles,” the newspaper continued.

But not just Arabs admired Israel, according to a-Sharq al-Awsat (admired their “democratic principles” or “the extent of Israel’s racism”?), “Israel was once considered a socialist country, which had earned the respect of former Iron Curtain countries.” The new law, however, the editorial implies, makes Israel no longer socialist. The newspaper did not explain what the citizenship regulations have to do with Israel’s status as a socialist state.

In conclusion, however, the Saudi-backed newspaper reveals its true concern for Israel’s identity, in light of its latest policies: “But with this new law and Israel’s intransigence with regard to the wall separating Arab from Israeli properties in the West Bank and Gaza, Israel has turned into a Jewish nationalist state.”
