An innovative new program has been announced which aims to alleviate unemployment among new immigrants while also decreasing Israel’s dependence on foreign labor. The Jewish Agency, Ministry of Immigrant Absorption and the Contractors and Building Construction Association have introduced a free course that will train Jewish immigrants to “get their hands dirty” and help build the Land of Israel – professionally.
The Construction Professions Training Program is financed by the Ministry of Labor at no cost to new immigrants (up to 10 years in Israel) who wish to enroll. It is six months long, three of which are an internship. The areas of training will include framework, infrastructure (flooring, plastering), plaster-wall installation and aluminum-work.
Participants will receive transportation or monthly bus passes, hot lunches, work clothes, shoes and tools for the duration of the course and will be eligible to receive additional grants from the Ministry of Labor according to regulations.
During the three-month internship participants will receive an additional 1,500 to 2,000 NIS per/month from the construction companies, in addition to the Ministry of Labor grant and reimbursement for travel expenses.
At the completion of the training period the participants will receive a salary of 6,000 to 7,500 NIS per/month (depending on the area expertise), be integrated as groups into large construction companies and will be based at their construction sites
After 12 months of work, employees will receive a “Diligence Grant” and the construction company will make a legal commitment regarding the worker.
Candidates for the program will be screened by the Jewish Agency and representatives of the construction companies and the Contractors Association; accordingly a tour of the building sites will be conducted.
