Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz, a former resident of Elkanah in the Shomron, now says that in exchange for "true peace," he would be willing to uproot communities in Yesha (Judea, Samaria and Gaza). Rejecting the Yesha Council premise that the Yesha settlement enterprise is "irreversible," Mofaz said, "Israel is a democratic country, and if there is a government decision to uproot, that's what will happen, just like in Yamit." The Likud government under Menachem Begin decided in 1979 to uproot the Sinai communities, including Yamit, as required by the peace treaty with Egypt.

Mofaz acknowledged that there were difficulties in uprooting and dismantling the little outpost in Yitzhar about a month ago, but he said that the army would be able to dismantle even "permanent communities." He insisted, however, that he would not agree to this policy unless he was convinced that it was in exchange for genuine peace.
