The Maccabiah Games - world Jewry\'s Olympics - are in danger. The games are scheduled to begin on July 16, but many athletes have already pulled out because of fears for their safety. The teams of the U.S. and Great Britain have implied that they may not come. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said that the games should not be canceled, even if fewer athletes take part, while his Deputy, Rabbi Michael Melchior, proposed today that the Maccabiah be put off for a few months. Knesset Education Committee Chairman Zevulun Orlev (NRP) sharply condemned this idea, and called for the suspension of Melchior from all his activities having to do with world Jewry. \"Instead of the government representative standing at the forefront of the campaign in favor of Jewish solidarity visits to Israel,\" Orlev said, \"Melchior gives legitimacy to the weakness and to the isolation of Israel even within the Jewish world.\" Melchior responded that he will be happy to have Orlev join with him in the hard task of working with world Jewry, and recommends that he not attack before he learns the facts. A final decision on the Maccabiah Games will be made next week.
