Gilad Sharon exercised his right to remain silent when questioned by police in the matter of the campaign finances, leading to criticism from the political right and left. Ahead of the planned interrogation of Omri Sharon, a Likud Knesset member, the Knesset Law Committee is planning to discuss the right of elected officials to remain silent when questioned by police. Police have also indicated that the prime minister will be questioned, if the need arises.
Likud MK Michael Eitan has called upon Prime Minister Sharon to deal with his sons as he did with party MK Naomi Blumenthal after she was questioned regarding alleged campaign wrongdoings. The prime minister was quick to distance himself from Blumenthal, criticizing her decision to block police investigators. He added that any party member found guilty of illegal actions would be distanced from the party. Eitan said there is no room for public officials to remain silent when under investigation for alleged law breaking.
Today, Prime Minister Sharon stated that he has nothing to hide, as he has done nothing wrong. If questioned by police, he said, he will cooperate and respond to all questions.
