The IDF opened yet another road in Gaza to Arab traffic today, after it was closed for almost two years. Opening this road, known as the Tiskaot route, means that Arabs and Jews will meet at an intersection that will have to be closed intermittently to allow each other to pass. The irony is that the construction of the Kisufim overpass last year, to which the residents strenuously objected, was precisely in order to avoid clashes of this nature - yet this is what will now happen only a few hundred meters away from there.
Residents of Gush Katif are joined in their objections by military personnel, who say that they have no choice but to follow government instructions and open the road.
"But don't worry about us," one resident said. "We will overcome this, as we have overcome the other problems, with G-d's help." As if to prove it, hundreds of youth from all over the country gathered today in the Jewish community of Netzarim just to the north of Kfar Darom. They came to discuss how they could contribute to solving national problems. Their day will be capped off with a Hassidic musical performance by the L'Chatchila band.
