The Jewish population in Israel may well be the biggest one in the world - although there's no way of knowing for sure. Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics recently reported that 5.4 million Jews live in Israel, while the number of U.S. Jews is apparently less - between 5.1 and 5.3 million.
Professor Sergio Della Pergola, head of the Center for Contemporary Judaism, told the Knesset Immigration Committee that there could be 5.3 million Jews in Israel, and 5.4 million in the U.S. In any event, Pergola said, within three years Israel will certainly have more Jews than the United States. In addition, he predicts, within 25 years or so, more than half of the world's Jews will live in Israel. The Halakhic [Jewish legal] ramifications of that will be significant, as many commandments such as installing a King, building the Holy Temple, and others are contingent upon having an absolute majority of the world's Jews in Israel.
