Police and security forces in Jerusalem were on high alert since yesterday due to intelligence warnings of an imminent attack in the capital. Forty schools were closed Tuesday morning in Jerusalem due to the secuorty services decision that sufficiently guarding the schools would be challenging on Election Day. By Tuesday morning, however, the portable roadblocks that had been placed in the north Jerusalem area on Monday were dismantled, as the alert level was lowered. In Ramallah, however, an IDF-imposed curfew remained in place, due to the threat of an imminent terrorist attack stemming from the city. All crossings in the Ramallah area have been closed to civilian traffic.
Later Tuesday, a renewed specific terrorism alert was announced along the seam-line with the Palestinian Authority, near Highway 65 and the Arab village of Umm el-Fahm. IDF checkpoints were put in place at the entrance and exists of Umm el-Fahm, while police have been stationed throughout the area and Border Guards are combing the area adjacent to the PA.
Also Tuesday, Arab terrorists opened fire at an Israeli security vehicle in Gush Katif from the direction of Khan Yunis, in Gaza. No one was injured, but several bullets struck and damaged the vehicle. Elsewhere in Gaza, a bomb was detonated near an Israeli bulldozer on the Israel-Egypt border. A Jordanian man was apprehended while attempting to set a kibbutz greenhouse on fire near the Israeli border. When he spotted IDF soldiers approaching, he attacked with an iron bar. The would-be vandal was shot, lightly injured and taken to hospital. Soldiers patrolling in the Balata refugee camp near the city of Shechem were attacked by Arabs who hurled three pipe bombs at them. No injuries to IDF forces were reported in any of the above incidents.
