An Arab Palestinian suicide terrorist, a student at Hevron's Polytechnic Institute, murdered a young Jewish couple last night in Hevron. The husband and his pregnant wife, Gadi and Dina Levy, were on their way to attend end-of-Sabbath prayer services in the Avraham Avinu neighborhood in the ancient Jewish city when they were murdered. The IDF has closed the Polytechnic Institute in the past because of terrorist activities there.

The terrorist, disguised as a typical Jewish resident of Hevron with a knitted yarmulke and a white Sabbath shirt, reached one of the main Jewish areas in the city when he aroused the suspicions of one or two soldiers. When they called upon him to stop, the terrorist who was apparently on his way to a large crowd of Jews nearby, started to run towards a nearer Jewish target - Gadi and Dina Levy - and detonated himself alongside them. Gadi was pronounced dead on the scene, and Dina, who was pregnant with the couple's first child, died of her wounds on the operating table in Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital. They are the 26th and 27th victims of Arab terrorism in the Hevron region in the past six months. Dina is survived by two children from a previous marriage.

The Levys were the 18th husband-and-wife couple murdered by Palestinian terrorists during the 32-month-old Oslo War. The previous such double murder occurred two months ago when Rabbi Eli Horowitz and his wife Dina - also of Kiryat Arba - were murdered in their home during their Sabbath eve dinner, leaving four children and five grandchildren. Other Jewish couples murdered by terrorists during the current Oslo War include the Dicksteins (nine orphans), the Kahanes (six), the Bablars (six), and the Schijveschuurders (five).

The 100 local residents and guests who were gathered in the Avraham Avinu neighborhood only dozens of meters away were thankful that the soldiers' alertness had prevented what could have been a massacre.

A Hevron spokesman said that the double killing, which took place shortly before last night's Sharon-Abu Mazen meeting in Jerusalem, was "Abu Mazen's and Mohammed Dahlan's greeting to Prime Minister Sharon in Jerusalem… Since Abu Mazen's appointment as prime minister of the PA, Arab terrorism has increased. In the past two weeks, two Jews were murdered in the Shomron by terrorists holed up in Arafat's Ramallah headquarters, the Mukata - yet Sharon and Mofaz have yet to give the orders to go in and get them."
