Rabbi Dr. Yitzhak Alfasi, one of the leading scholars of Hasidism of recent generations and the author of some 90 books and works on the Hasidic movement and its great figures, has passed away at the age of 97.
Alfasi, a Distinguished Citizen of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, leaves behind an extensive literary and scholarly body of work that, over the course of decades, made the history of Hasidism, its Rebbes and its various dynasties accessible to the general public.
His family announced his passing on Thursday evening. His funeral will take place tomorrow, Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at Kiryat Shaul Cemetery in Tel Aviv.
Rabbi Ze'evik Harel eulogized Alfasi and described his unique contribution to passing on the legacy of the great Hasidic leaders to the current generation.
“In my mind's eye, I can see them banging on the table in the hall of Hasidism in the heavenly academy, as the great Rebbes, from the Baal Shem Tov through the various branches of Hasidism, come out to welcome the man who made their legacy and history so warmly accessible to our generation," Rabbi Harel wrote.
Rabbi Harel said that Alfasi's books had personally accompanied him since childhood. “Dr. Alfasi left behind some 90 works. I grew up on his books and read them avidly," he wrote.
Beyond the extraordinary scope of his writing, Alfasi's particular strength lay in his ability to present great and complex figures to readers in just a few precise words. “To this day, I never cease to marvel at his ability, in the biographical encyclopedias he wrote about the great figures of Hasidism, to sketch the outlines of such towering personalities in just a few short sentences," Rabbi Harel eulogized. “That is a great art and an ability to penetrate a personality, draw out its points of depth and make them accessible."
Rabbi Tzuriel Halamish joined in the eulogies and emphasized the scale of Alfasi's scholarly enterprise, much of which was carried out during a period when the technological tools available to researchers today did not yet exist.
“R. Yitzhak Alfasi has passed away. He was 97," Rabbi Halamish wrote. “A remarkable scholar of Hasidism, a master of concise expression, whose life's project encompassed 90 diverse books on the Hasidic movement."
Rabbi Halamish particularly noted that Alfasi's enormous body of work was built “before the age of computers and databases" - a period when gathering material, locating sources, cross-referencing accounts and constructing such an extensive biographical repository required prolonged research using traditional methods.
Rabbi Halamish concluded his remarks with the words: “A one-of-a-kind man, inspiring and astonishing. May his soul be bound up with the Lord his God."
