Shalom Lion, father of Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, passed away on Wednesday at Ichilov Hospital. He was 92 years old.
His funeral will take place tomorrow at the Kiryat Shaul cemetery in Tel Aviv, where he will be laid to rest. The Lion family will sit shiva in Jerusalem.
Shalom Lion was born in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. He immigrated to Israel with his parents before the Holocaust, thus saving his life. His father's family remained in Europe and perished at Auschwitz during the Holocaust.
The Jerusalem Municipality added that "Shalom belonged to the generation that built their homes in the Land of Israel out of faith, tradition, modesty, and hard work. Throughout his life, he combined manual labor with many years of cantorial tradition, and was a central and beloved figure in his family."
They further added that "together with his wife, Hannah, of blessed memory, he built a wonderful family and raised his children with values of dedication, responsibility, love of the people and the land, and devotion to Jewish tradition. The entire Jerusalem Municipality shares in the grief of the Lion family and extends its condolences to the mayor, his brother and sister, his children, grandchildren, and all members of the family."
