Detectives from the Cyber Unit of Lahav 433 arrested an Ashkelon resident this morning (Tuesday) on suspicion of infiltrating dozens of companies in the Israeli economy with malware and collecting computer files and sensitive information. The Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court extended his detention, and his name was barred from publication at the request of his attorney.
Malware is software designed, among other things, to infiltrate or damage a computer, collect sensitive information, or gain access to private computer networks without the user's knowledge.
According to police, the Cyber Unit conducted an undercover investigation in which investigators worked to identify the suspect. Following what police described as complex analytical work, investigators succeeded in identifying him.
This morning, the investigation became overt and the suspect was arrested. Police searched his home as well as several additional companies.
The suspect was questioned under caution on suspicion of offenses under the Computers Law, illegal wiretapping, invasion of privacy, and additional offenses. At the conclusion of his questioning, he was brought before the Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court for a hearing on the extension of his detention.
The court extended the suspect's detention until August 23. In addition, the judge prohibited the publication of the suspect's name in accordance with his attorney's request.
The case is being handled by the Cyber Department of the State Attorney's Office.
