Arab media is reporting four airstrikes early Tuesday morning targeting the runway of the Abu al-Duhur military airport in the eastern Idlib countryside in northern Syria.
According to the report, the aircraft that carried out the strikes have not been identified, although some sources cited by Al Jazeera said they may have been Israeli aircraft.
The reports said that information regarding the incident remains limited and that there has been no official comment on the strikes.
Al Jazeera reported that the strikes caused material damage to the airport's runway, but that no injuries were reported.
Despite Israel not officially taking responsibility for the strike, US Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack accused the Jewish state, calling the strikes an “unnecessary escalation" that does not advance regional stability.
Barrack said the Al-Sharra government has not adopted a “predatory posture" or maintained proxy forces, and has repeatedly indicated a preference for de-escalation with Israel. He said the US would continue to host discussions aimed at encouraging diplomacy over military action.
“The United States continues to believe that restraint and engagement offer the more constructive course," Barrack said, urging all parties to prioritize dialogue over further military incidents.
The Abu al-Duhur military airport is located 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Aleppo, approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Israel.
According to the report, this was the first such strike on the airport since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
