2,007 recently discharged soldiers received higher education scholarships last month, with the assistance of the Association for the Welfare of IDF Soldiers, the Jewish Agency reports. The scholarships were made possible thanks to the support of the Jewish Agency and the generosity of the United Jewish Communities. Minister of Defense Shaul Mofaz, IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Moshe Ya’alon, Chairman of the UJC Executive, Robert Goldberg, and Chairman of the Jewish Agency, Sallai Meridor, took part in the ceremony awarding the scholarships.

“This initiative of the Friends of the IDF is a fitting means of saying thank you to those on whose shoulders the security of Israel rests,” said Sallai Meridor. He also thanked the UJC, which contributed the funds “within minutes of learning of this important venture.”

The Friends of the IDF established a special scholarship fund, which enables soldiers who have served in combat units to receive scholarships for the first year of their higher education, as part of the “Adopt a Soldier” project.
