New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office about six months ago, is facing growing criticism from city residents. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, criticism of him has focused on his anti-Israel rhetoric, his approach toward the business sector, and difficulties in implementing the tax reform he promised during his election campaign.
A court in the city ordered a temporary freeze on the implementation of a new tax that Mamdani sought to impose on residents who own luxury homes in the city. The decision came following a lawsuit filed by residents alleging flaws in the tax’s implementation.
US President Donald Trump announced that the federal government is considering legal measures to block the new law. Trump, who invested heavily in New York real estate in the past, described the New York City administration’s economic initiative as a “dangerous political experiment."
A new Siena College poll indicates a decline in public support for Mamdani, with 44% of eligible voters in the city holding an unfavorable opinion of the mayor. Nevertheless, Mamdani’s overall approval rating stands at 47%, while among likely voters he receives 69% support.
At the same time, Mamdani’s continued rhetoric against Israel has raised deep concern among leaders of the city’s Jewish community. Anger within the Jewish community intensified after the mayor released a video calling on federal authorities to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and describing him as a war criminal.
Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch, president of the New York Board of Rabbis, addressed the growing tensions with the city administration. Rabbi Hirsch said that, in his view, relations have deteriorated dramatically since Mamdani took office.
Mamdani met with a group of rabbis to discuss their concerns and made clear that he would act against antisemitism in the city. However, the mayor has not retracted his provocative statements, including the phrase “globalize the intifada."
The mayor’s office stated that the administration is working to strengthen the economy, reduce crime rates, and expand services for residents.
