An Italian newspaper, Libero, will be sending out an Israeli flag to its 80,000 customers this week, in honor of Israel’s 55th Independence Day. The flag is part of a special, festive Israeli Independence Day edition of Libero. This editorial decision stands in stark contradistinction to much of the Italian press, which has taken on a dark, anti-Israel hue of late, including blatantly anti-Semitic cartoons and editorials.
The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot quoted the assistant editor of the newspaper, Renato Farino, as saying: “We want to express our absolute identity with Israel on its Independence Day. We are trying to convey to our readers that the State of Israel is really part of Europe, of the Western world. I can promise that Libero will always be at Israel’s side.”
